TAPE BANDAGES CONNECTIONS TO OUR CHILDREN

Over the past 100 years, to today, the wound care industry's popular family brands have spent billions of dollars on ad campaigns using children to get their parents to buy their bandages because of mere claims that their bandages' adhesive materials will continue to stick on the child's skin, even while underwater.  Yet, these same commercials tape bandage ads never talk about how long the bandage should stay on the skin or over the wound. There is no word from these makers of tape bandages on how to properly dispose of their bandages after usage. What about the chemicals used to make the adhesive materials, and the bandages themselves, and what are the long-term effects to the skin in chlorinated swimming pools or salt water? 

 

THE COLOR OF TAPE BANDAGES - CARTOON IMAGES ON BANDAGES

Having children's superheroes, Marvel Iron Man, Barbie, Mickey Mouse, and other famous cartoon characters on tape bandages is another successful marketing tactic to entice children to ask their parents to buy the tape bandages, and some children would be encouraged to hurt themselves just to have a bandage on their skin. We have talked to a Child Psychologist on this matter and asked whether children could have enough passion to actually create a wound, just to have their favorite cartoon character on their skin, and it was determined that cartooned bandages could influence a child to be motivated to hurt themselves.  

 

THE COLOR OF TAPE BANDAGES - IDENTITY AND GENDER POLITICS

Pink and or beige tape bandages were the norm because they matched the majority of fair-skinned individuals. Out of protest, people of color wanted tape bandages that matched their skin tone, and companies like Johnson & Johnson and others met the demand, and today, there are multi-skin-toned tape bandages. Groups from the LGPTQ are also represented with colors representing their rainbow pride colors. Keep in mind, these cosmetic color changes do not affect the effectiveness of healing, nor do the materials that touch the wound have any benefits. 

 

CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS FILED AGAINST A TAPE BANDAGE COMPANY 

As of 2024, a class action lawsuit was filed against Johnson & Johnson, using known carcinogenic chemicals to make their Band-Aid bandages. Bandages that had the greater amount of carcinogenic chemicals were allegedly found in the multi-tone tape bandages.
